YouTube Update 2013 – YouTube Updates You Need To Know About

It seems like there is a YouTube update every other week. If it’s not an interface change, it’s links and buttons going missing…
So, with my recent trip to YouTube, I asked them what was coming up in the next few weeks and months, so you could be ready for the NEXT YOUTUBE UPDATE.
Here are 4 YouTube Updates you need to know about to be successful on YouTube and get your videos seen and ranked…

YouTube Update #1

The first major YouTube update is YouTube adding Annotations to TV and Mobile Apps. This is big because up to now, Annotations were only able to be used on the website and mobiles and TV cope with them.
Now YouTube are going to add that functionality to their Mobile Apps and also TV Apps, which will be on Smart TVs and Games Consoles. So now you’ll be able to get clicks from the videos on these apps.

YouTube Update #2

The second YouTube update happening on YouTube is their emphasis on Serialized Content. You can see this with the recent purchase of AwesomenessTV for $33m by DreamWorks. They have content added regularly like a TV Channel and has grown a huge audience from it.

YouTube Update #3

The third major YouTube update is that YouTube are moving to be more and more like TV. As mentioned in YouTube Update #2, they want serialized content because they want regular “Shows” like TV.
Now with Channels adding Paid Content to their viewers, YouTube is looking to maximize their revenues and start to make money from the billions of hours of video on their site.

YouTube Update #4

This is the biggest YouTube update of all… YouTube will be rolling out their One Channel Layout to all the channels in June. So it won’t matter if you like it or not, you’ll have to deal with it in June.
This makes things very interesting for Full Partner Channels who have customised headers on their Channels. This update will mean that everyone will be the same and there won’t be any need to join a Partner Network to become a full YouTube Partner.
So there you go, these are 4 updates coming to YouTube in the next few weeks and months. Let me know what you think of what’s happening at YouTube and how it will affect you. Let me know in the comments below.
If you have any questions about any of these updates, feel free to ask here to.
Make sure you make the necessary changes to your YouTube Channel to take advantage of these YouTube Updates before YouTube update without you knowing… 🙂

    Thanks for the updates David.

  • Mike says:

    Hey David,
Thanks for the info…great stuff as usual.
Question: how did you do the overlay with the optin? As in, how did you stop the video, etc…

    • David Walsh says:

      Hey Mike,
Thanks very much for your comments, much appreciated 🙂
The player I’m using is LeadPlayer. You can get it at (my affiliate link).
It takes your YouTube video and puts an optin over it, which is quite good to build your list.
It’s very simple and straight forward to set up and use. Another great piece of software from Clay Collins.

  • Skip Martin says:

The new YT format, in a word, SUCKS. I will wait until the last possible moment to switch over. It’s ugly — all white with all these mandatory recommended channels.
I just want the goddam thing to service my client base and provide necessary information — not tempting them to wander off because something unrelated distracted them.
    I really despise Google.

    • David Walsh says:

      Hey Skip,
Unfortunately there’s nothing that can be done about it. It’s YouTube’s/Google’s ball and they’ll do what they want with it.
YouTube has restricted a number of things and given one or two in return to make up for it.
I’m working on some videos to show you how to get around the new layout and what you can do to make up for the functionality they’ve taken away. So keep an eye out for them.
If there’s something specific you’d like me to look at, let me know and I’ll see what I can do 🙂

  • greg says:

    great info thank you !

  • piano movers chicago says:

Live piano on a grand, not a digital. Which camcorder would give me
the best sound quality for a youtube video, perhaps?.

    • David Walsh says:

      Hey PMC,
      Thanks for your comment.
The camcorder isn’t what you’re looking for for the best sound. It’s the mic.
Make sure your camcorder has a mic in jack on it, then you can use whatever mic you want.
Your local pro video retailer will have all the best mics available. Like camcorders, things are changing regularly so they’ll have the best knowledge on what’s available now. 🙂
