You’ve set up your new YouTube Channel, but you’re wondering how to change a YouTube Channel name…

Well this is the question asked by swimwear model and actress Chanel Ryan in this segment of Ask David.

Like many on YouTube, she set up her channel, but wasn’t able to add the name she wanted, and couldn’t find out where to change it.

So she turned to me to find out how to do so, and here’s the video answering not only that question, but others she has to do with her Channel…

To change a Channel Name on your YouTube Channel, you need to go to ”Settings” on the top and then “YouTube Settings”.

On the next page you’ll have a link “Change to a business or other name, and disconnect Google+ profile”. Click on that and it will bring up a box where you can check to see if the Channel Name you want is available.

Type in the name you want and click on Check availability.

If your Channel Name is available, then click on the Ok button.

If not, then you’ll need to play around with the name that you have in the box to get the one that’s available.

YouTube will give you suggestions, but they’re mostly bad. If you’re going with a name, and it’s not available, then you can add “The” in front of it, or “Official” or “Online” at the end.

You can only use numbers and letters, so you can’t get away with putting a dash in it.

With what you select as your Channel Name, I suggest you put Capital Letters at the start of each word in your name.

With my channel, it’s DavidWalshOnline. This allows the different words to stand out in the name, rather than it all being lower case letters. In the video, I used DavidWalshMarketing. Again, these words are differentiated with the capital letter.

Use this in your name to make the different parts stand out.

When you eventually get the one you want, click on the Ok button and you’ll be done.

In the second part of Chanel’s question, she asked about how the videos she uploaded didn’t end up on the order she added them.

This may have something to do with how long it took to upload them, rather than when she added them.

When a video is a bigger filesize, it will take longer to upload and to process. When all that’s done, it becomes available to view, which is what I believe has happened here.

If you have a similar situation, and have very low views on your videos, then just delete them and upload them again.

Add them in the order you want, one at a time and wait until the video is up and processed before adding another one.

You will then have them in the order that you want.

That’s how you change a YouTube Channel name.

The first major YouTube update is YouTube adding Annotations to TV and Mobile Apps. This is big because up to now, Annotations were only able to be used on the website YouTube.com and mobiles and TV cope with them.

Now YouTube are going to add that functionality to their Mobile Apps and also TV Apps, which will be on Smart TVs and Games Consoles. So now you’ll be able to get clicks from the videos on these apps.

YouTube Update #2

The second YouTube update happening on YouTube is their emphasis on Serialized Content. You can see this with the recent purchase of AwesomenessTV for $33m by DreamWorks. They have content added regularly like a TV Channel and has grown a huge audience from it.

YouTube Update #3

The third major YouTube update is that YouTube are moving to be more and more like TV. As mentioned in YouTube Update #2, they want serialized content because they want regular “Shows” like TV.

Now with Channels adding Paid Content to their viewers, YouTube is looking to maximize their revenues and start to make money from the billions of hours of video on their site.

YouTube Update #4

This is the biggest YouTube update of all… YouTube will be rolling out their One Channel Layout to all the channels in June. So it won’t matter if you like it or not, you’ll have to deal with it in June.

This makes things very interesting for Full Partner Channels who have customised headers on their Channels. This update will mean that everyone will be the same and there won’t be any need to join a Partner Network to become a full YouTube Partner.

Tip 3

When setting out to create a YouTube video or YouTube Channel that you want to work for you for a long time to come, there is one thing you have to do every time in order to achieve this – Create Content People Want To Watch!

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it… Create videos that is proven that people go to YouTube to watch.

On YouTube, it’s regularly asked how to get more YouTube video views. It seems like a nightmare to do at times…

You’ve created a great piece of work, but how do you get those people who you know you can help to see your video, and to make a difference?

I got to spend some time with YouTube recently and they gave me their tips for anyone to get more YouTube video views.

So here are your 3 Top Tips to get more views on YouTube videos…

Tips #1

The first thing YouTube recommends to get more views on their videos is to not upload everything at once.

They like to have content added regularly.  YouTube want your content to be serialized so that people come back again and again to view your videos.

If you can be like a TV program – going out with something new every week – that’s probably the best scenario.

You don’t have to upload every week.  You can add content every other week or once a month.  As long as it’s regularly uploaded to YouTube so that your viewers and subscribers get something new on a regular basis, that’s that YouTube are looking for.

Tip #2

YouTube recommend you use the resources that you have available to you to get the word out about your video.

Get your friends and family on Social Media to go to your video on YouTube, watch it, Like, Comment and Share, etc so it begins to get the word out there about your video.

When people Share your video on say Facebook or Twitter, their friends see it in their feed.  They usually have the same likes and interests so they will click on your video link and watch your video.

They in turn will Like, Comment, Share, etc which creates a snowball effect of viewers.

After a while, because you follow Tip #3, you’ll have a number of Subscribers to your Channel who will be waiting for your next video.  And that leads me to…

Tip #3

When you create Content People Want To Watch, people will naturally share it with their friends, especially on Social Media.

As I mentioned, people are friends with people who have the same or similar interests.  If they’re all into video games and you have a video about how to get to an advanced level in Tomb Raider 2013 then they’ll share that with  others on Facebook, etc, and you’ll get more views organically by having good content.

These may seem like simple tips, and they are.  But because they’re simple doesn’t make them any less effective.

Many people ask “How do I become a YouTube Partner?”

Being a YouTube Partner has many benefits.  You can make money from ads on your videos, you can have Custom Thumbnails, you can have External Links through Annotations… so it’s worth becoming a YouTube Partner.

And to become a Partner, the fact is, that today, it’s quite easy.  And it’s easy or a reason…

YouTube want you as a “Partner” (and I put that in “” for a reason which I will get to later) because it allows you to monetize your videos.  And when you monetize, THEY MONETIZE!

So in this video, I show you how you can become a YouTube Partner, all within minutes…

Before you can become a YouTube Partner, your account has to be more than 30 days old and has to be in “good standing”.  That means that you’re uploading content that is belonged to you and not someone else.

It’s fairly straight forward.  As long as you’re playing ball, you’re ok, which is for the vast majority of people…

One thing I do want to clarify, which I alluded to above, is the fact that becoming a Partner today is very different than it was a few years ago.

YouTube have watered down what a Partner is…

Before, YouTube invited you to become a partner when you showed that you uploaded good content to your Channel regularly.

In fact, one Channel I had in the Martial Arts niche was invited to become a Partner after only 2 videos and a few hundred views!  So it didn’t take that much to be invited.  They could see that it was going to be different and wanted to have a Partner in that space.

But for most people, it wasn’t that easy.

Today, however, anyone can really become a partner which gives you a lot of extra functionality to their Channel, which is what I’m giving you here.

The whole process is outlined in this video where I show you step by step what to do, and how to do it.

When you look at your Channel Setting screen again, you’ll now see that there are more green lights on there.  You have now more functionality on your site.

The next thing to do is to enable Monetization on your Channel. Click on the Enable button, agree to their Terms & Conditions and you’r good to go.

You’ll now have Custom Thumbnails (if your Channel is more than 30 days old) as well as External Links in Annotations and you can make money from advertising on your videos.

If you would really like to become a “Full” YouTube Partner, then you’ll need to join one of the Partner Networks. Here is a list of YouTube Partner Networks that you can apply to if you want to have the full customised Channel.

There may not be any benefit to this in the near future with YouTube’s One Channel layout coming into effect. All channels will probably be forced to more over eventually, so applying for Full Partnership may only last a short while.

But it’s up to you…

They are not backed by a major partner but still are trustworthy and have been a YT partner for a long time. Exonia has plenty of reviews all around the web and none talks bad things about them.

Creating eye catching thumbnails for your YouTube videos is one of the most underused methods of creating free traffic.

This is your “advertisement” for your video, and when used properly, can be very successful.

YouTube does give you the option to select one of three thumbnails it gives you from your video.  More often than not, they’re not what you’re looking for.

Using this quick method will help you stand out from the crowd to get more clicks and views to your videos.

Here I show you how I create my thumbnails for my videos so you can create your own easily and quickly.

Think about it.  There are billions of hours of video on YouTube, all competing for views.  They’re not all competing for the same views but they all want to be watched.

How many times have you gone to YouTube looking for a tutorial or a tip on a certain topic, only to see a cute cat or something just as distracting grab your attention and you end up watching that too..?

It’s ok, you can admit it… you’re among friends here… We’ve all done it!

There was something eyecatching about that video that made us want to watch it.

Even with videos we actively search to watch. The ones with the eyecatching image are typically the ones we click on first.  And if they have the content we’re looking for, we rarely go any further.

This is the power of the eyecatching thumbnail.

As I said in the video, I prefer to use an image of me where I’m “in action”. This gives an impression of “movement” in a way, like you’ve been photographed in mid talk type of thing. These, more often than not, stimulate our imagination more than just a static picture.

Like Usain Bolt striding across the finish line of the 100m to break the World Record – again! – or a racing car doing 200 mph around a racing track. A photograph of these in mid action is far more powerful than if they were both standing still.

Use this style of YouTube thumbnail if you want to brand yourself, as I also said in the video.

If you’re not interested in branding yourself, then you can use any image you want, if at all, or simply use text. Having the title of the video in text on your thumbnail – so it’s readable at a small size – will also help you stand out.
